And I don't know that it's artist greed as much as it is control. Artists like Pearl Jam who have very sizeable fan clubs should not be putting prime seats at exorbitant prices. But an artist who is just dumping seats into a general onsale - it's tough to put that third row seat into the public onsale because you know it's not Charlie Bucket who's going to get the golden ticket, it's a reseller who's going to charge $500 anyway. I guess I was lucky that I didn't have to deal with it pre-Covid (was it even a prominent thing pre-Covid?) but seeing literally the last row in an arena marked as Platinum tickets for Paul McCartney was both crazy and un-surprising. | Lollapalooza: 2010 Bonnaroo: 2011, 2013 Coachella: 2013 (w2), 2017 (w2), 2023 (w1) Boston Calling: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 Governors Ball: 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 Primavera Sound: 2015, 2022 (w2) Panorama: 2016, 2017 The Meadows: 2016 III Points: 2016 Pitchfork: 2018, 2019 Pickathon: 2018 Wide Awake: 2022 |

I was watching the Phish ons sale for a while and was literally watching regular tickets turn into platinum and triple in price over the course of like 15 minutes.

They can tell LN whether they want platinum or not. Longtime friend who works for LN at a venue box office has told me that there have been onsales he was monitoring and was then instructed by artists management to turn the feature on because they forgot to include it in their instructions when the show was being built ahead of time. Artists dont care or realize how much of an issue its becoming during onsales. There was one occasion when this was brought to the attention of the artist and their management where they pretty much were all smiles and did not hesitate to implement it. Madonna on that theater tour she did a few years ago. As soon as they found out it meant more money towards them they were all in.

So in some ways its easier to reconcile Platinum if it means the price gouging is transparent instead of a bot getting tickets and putting them on Stubhub immediately.

I don’t blame the artists as much as their management, touring agencies, etc. It still falls on the artists to be involved with that process. I dont know why it fell by the wayside where there used to be a bunch of small ticketing agencies that did direct presales for artists and now its really rare for that to even happen anymore.

I dont know why it fell by the wayside where there used to be a bunch of small ticketing agencies that did direct presales for artists and now its really rare for that to even happen anymore. What happened was a concerted effort by Ticketmaster/Livenation to abuse its dominant market position and buy or destroy the competition. -Songkick (which previously merged with Crowdsurge) Ticketmaster hired a former Songkick executive who then hacked into Songkick’s system to get info on pending or future artist contracts and used that info to ensure none of the artists signed with Songkick. They choked out Songkick’s business, and the company eventually ran out of money and had to shut down. WMG bought the concert discovery piece of Songkick out of bankruptcy. TM/LN paid a $10 million fine to avoid prosecution related to the hacking. -Ticketstoday Acquired by TM/LN Musictoday -Acquired by TM/LN -Frontgate Acquired by TM/LN -Seated Still independent. Pre COVID they sold a lot of presale tickets direct. These days they sell the occasional direct ticket but mostly just link to presales on the primary ticketing site. There are no independent presale ticketing agencies left with any scale. And it’s too difficult for a new one to gain any serious traction, because artists know it’s too risky to get on TM/LN’s bad side. A handful of artists like Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam and Phish have fan club based presale programs, but in recent years many of those have shifted over to TM/LN owned platforms. Phish now runs on top of Ticketstoday. Eddie Vedder’s latest tour used Ticketmaster Verified Fan and Ticketstoday. The government really f*cked up by allowing the Ticketmaster Livenation merger.

Olivia Rodrigo went no platinum tickets for her tour and if I had to bet, the secondary market will make more profit on those shows than Olivia will make in revenue, let alone profit.

I mean, this is all a matter of what you value. "In order to maintain low ticket prices and fan club accessibility, we will be releasing a limited number of premium tickets to the public at market rate price at a later date." Remember when Pearl Jam used to be the good guys? They've gone from testifying against Ticketmaster in front of Congress, to using Ticketmaster for their entire ticketing operation, and enabling platinum tickets.

We also already have tickets to The Killers in Nashville which is Saturday September 17th. Not a bad trio at all but I'm also a nervous traveler so am already having concerns about potential flight issues back home Friday AM! Will be a fantastic 3 days provided no logistical issues.
